Part of bus dangles from NYC overpass

A section of an “accordion” bus was dangling off a New York City overpass near the George Washington Bridge after the vehicle crashed late Thursday. Authorities said the nine people on board were brought to area hospitals and the bus was secured and was to be towed.

Police said the Metropolitan Transit Authority bus “failed to navigate” a portion of the Cross Bronx Expressway or suffered a brake failure. No other vehicles were involved.

Onlookers posted video of the scene on social media. It showed the rear portion of the bus sitting on the highway but the front portion hanging from the overpass.

The Fire Department said one of the injuries was serious, two were “non life-threatening” and the other six were minor. The Associated Press said the person seriously hurt was the driver.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Golden Gate Bridge could be crowded this weekend: Roadshow

Q: Every year on my husband‘s birthday our family walks across the Golden Gate Bridge. We are planning to go this weekend. I would like to find out if the bridge has been very busy with people walking since we are very concerned about COVID-19 issues. We don’t want to be walking very close to other people. Also, will the parking lot be open?

Joan Rabin, Los Altos

A: I love your tradition. Bridge visitorship has declined significantly during the pandemic, but there is occasional crowding on weekends and holidays. With dry and warm weather forecast this Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, I would expect a good number of walkers. Bridge officials will announce their plans today for this weekend. Check goldengate.org for updated information.

Any parking lot closures will be highlighted on a bright orange banner at the top of the page.

Keep face masks on, and maintain physical distance, as you normally would. Try to hold to your tradition, and be ready to make that celebratory birthday walk together belatedly, on a quieter weekend, if crowds make it COVID-unsafe.

Q: Why does the 10-mile stretch of Highway 101 between Gilroy and Morgan Hill seem so forgotten?

A major effort to rehab the road was made back in 2016, I believe. A cement mixing facility was actually set up in one of the cloverleaves. But this effort resulted in the patched areas being considerably higher than the surrounding pavement. The road was almost more uncomfortable than before that repair. Despite two attempts to repair it, you can still feel the patches.

Today, the southbound lane three is a mess. Some parts cannot be driven in if you care about your load or vehicle. My question is, why this road did not get more attention?

Steve Sayle

A: There are plans to widen 101 into San Benito County in a few more years. But here’s the bad news. Repaving 101 is not on the list anytime soon.

Q: I have traveled from New Mexico and Arizona to California, and the difference in driver behavior is staggering. All through New Mexico and Arizona, folks move to the right when not passing. Not here.

Pickup truck driver who crashed near Bay Bridge toll plaza identified

Authorities have identified a man who died from his injuries in a crash near the Bay Bridge toll plaza on Wednesday but have not determined yet whether a medical issue caused the wreck.

Tan Mao, 61, of San Francisco, veered across several lanes of traffic in a pickup truck and into a collapsible barrel separating lanes at the toll plaza, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash happened just east of the toll plaza around 9:50 a.m.

No other vehicles were involved.

Mao was alive when rescue workers rushed him away to a hospital, but he died there, according to the CHP.

The CHP suspects that Mao suffered a medical issue before the crash, because the pickup truck veered out of its lane sharply and suddenly. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will do an autopsy, including toxicology tests. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor, the CHP said.

You don’t need a photographic memory to play bridge — and some people who have one are apt to leave their lens cap on anyway — but when you have a guess, to count out the defenders’ distribution may help.

At today’s five clubs, South grabbed dummy’s ace of spades and let the nine of trumps ride. West won and cashed a spade. East threw a diamond, and West shifted to the queen of diamonds.

Declarer took dummy’s ace, drew trumps with the jack and eight, and led a heart to his jack. Down he went when West had the queen.

DIAMOND RUFFS

South should make his game. After he takes the ace of diamonds, he ruffs a diamond, leads a trump to dummy and ruffs the last diamond with the ace. West discards a spade.

South then has a complete count: West had six spades, two diamonds and three trumps, hence two hearts. To lead a trump to dummy and finesse with the jack of hearts won’t help even if East has the queen. East will still get a heart trick. South must take the A-K, hoping West has Q-x.

DAILY QUESTION

You hold: S 7 3 H A K J 3 D 2 C A Q 10 7 6 4. The dealer, at your right, opens one diamond. You overcall two clubs, the next player bids two diamonds and two passes follow. What do you say?

ANSWER: To pass might be right. Partner might have length in spades and diamonds and no tolerance for either of your suits. Still, to let the opponents play in comfort at the two level when they’ve found a fit is a losing approach. Be an optimist and bid two hearts.

Bridge is a problem-solver’s game, but Cy the Cynic is reluctant to base his play on an inference. That would mean trusting an opponent to play logically, and Cy trusts nobody.

Cy was declarer at today’s 3NT. West led the seven of spades: deuce, queen … and Cy had to judge. Winning would be fine if West had the ace of clubs: When Cy lost to the ace next, his jack of spades would be safe from attack, and he would have nine winners.

But if East had the ace of clubs, Cy needed to play low and play low on East’s spade return as well. He could isolate West’s long spades.

FIVE TRICKS

The Cynic guessed wrong and won. He lost five tricks when East took the ace of clubs and returned the nine of spades.

Cy succeeds if he draws a delicate inference. If West had five spades headed by the ace plus the ace of clubs (and maybe a red-suit honor), he might have overcalled one spade at favorable vulnerability. Cy should have ducked twice in spades.

Tomorrow: another inference.

DAILY QUESTION

You hold: S K J 5 3 H Q 6 D A Q C Q J 9 5 3. Your partner opens one heart. The next player passes. What do you say?

ANSWER: A jump to 3NT would be roughly descriptive, but you need not rush. Bid two clubs. If partner rebids two hearts, you can bid an economical two spades next. If your hand were weaker and worth only one constructive response — say you held K J 5 3, Q 6, K 5, 10 9 5 4 2 — you would respond one spade to look for a fit in the major suit.

Hundreds of Bay Area residents protest crackdown on Indian farmers

Hundreds of people led a procession across the Bay Bridge Saturday afternoon in solidarity with farmers in India who are protesting several agriculture laws.

Bay Area residents, many of them Indian immigrants or residents of South Asian descent, were joined by travelers from the Central Valley and greater Sacramento area to wave flags, honk horns and chant protest slogans. The caravan departed near the Port of Oakland and circled past the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco, where protesters said the country’s deregulatory laws will drive Indian farmers to economic ruin. It snarled traffic on the bridge for much of the afternoon.
